Silver always loved animals. Wherever she lived she had cats. The last beings to see her alive would have been her cats. When she was scalded in her flat in Chicago, her only thoughts were of her cats. She yelled to her neighbors, close the door, don't let my babies out. Probably the last words she said.

Vintage Burlesque Poster

Although there is no evidence that Silver performed in what we'd call strip shows today, she did earn her living for a time as an actress in traveling theater companies. This enabled her to get out of Denver when she needed to. Her purpose in moving to Chicago was to write her novel. To that end she stayed in cheap rooms and wrote around the clock until "Star of Blood" was finished.
